Abstract
713,536. Reservoir pens. KOVACE, T. July 3, 1951 [July 15, 1950], No. 15741/51. Class 146(3) A reservoir pen, comprising a nib 7, Fig. 1, and a hollow body 3 inserted in the front end of the pen barrel 1 and an overflow chamber surrounding the body 3, is characterized in that the nib or front end of the hollow body hermetically seals the mouth of the barrel and surrounds both an ink duct 8 leading to the nib and also an air channel 9 leading to the overflow chamber. The rear of the hollow body 3 separates the overflow chamber and ink reservoir 4, while the front is a press fit in the end wall 2 of the barrel 1. A feed bar 6 fits in the bore of the body 3 to form the ink duct 8. The duct 8 is connected to a nib 7 slit at 26 by fissures 25 in the feed bar 6 at the front end, and to the overflow chamber by a transverse capillary slit 24. The overflow chamber, comprises annular chambers 13 spaced by partitions 14, the chambers 13 extending from the nib side to longitudinal ridges 15, Fig. 3, forming an air channel 18 having ink fissures 22. The chambers 13 are interconnected by capillary spaces 16 connected to the ink fissures 22 by capillary spaces 17. Air to replace ink used is drawn into the reservoir 4 Fig. 1, through the channel 9 in the feed bar 6, transverse bores 10 and 11 in the feed bar and body 3 respectively, an air channel 12 in the body 3, an annular channel 19 and the channel 18, and through channels 20 and 21. Ink, displaced from the reservoir 4, due for example, to a warming of the air therein, is sucked up by the channels 20 and 18, through transverse slits 23 and chambers 13 and then fills the channel 19. The ink in the channels 18 and 19 must be used up, or returned to the reservoir 4 before air can flow to the reservoir to release further ink. Flooding of the air duct 9 is prevented by the absence of a capillary connection between the space 8 and the bore 10. Ink reaching the overflow chamber from the reservoir 4 owing to shaking of the pen clogs the air channel 18, thereby preventing further ink being released from the reservoir.
