Abstract
1277773 Making regenerators; planing PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN NV 12 Aug 1969 [15 Aug 1968] 40297/69 Headings B3A and B3L [Also in Division F4] A filling mass for a regenerator is made by compressing and sintering a bundle of wires formed from a single piece of starting material 1. A moving steel band 1 is cut by a toothed cutter 4 to form wires 5 and grooves in the band 1. The ridges between the grooves are severed by a flat cutter 7 to again give the band 1 a flat surface and form wires 8 which are combined at a roller 10 with the wires 5 to form a group 11. By arranging several pairs of toothed and flat cutters along the path of the band 1 (Fig. 1b, not shown), several groups 11 of wires can be formed into a bundle of parallel wires. The mass 16 is formed by stacking layers of the wires at 90 degrees to each other or folding a layer into zig-zag formation or into a helical coil (Figs. 2- 4, not shown). The mass is compressed in a die to 50% of its original volume, normalized at 650‹ C. in H 2 , further compressed and sintered at 1100‹ C. The sintered mass may be turned on a lathe to the required shape. The housing 17 of the regenerator has metal gauze ends 18.
