Abstract
1,264,843. Closing containers. SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd., and NORDSEE DEUTSCHE HOCHSEEFISCHEREI G.m.b.H. 24 Feb., 1969 [22 Feb., 1968], No. 9726/69. Heading B8C. A method of (or apparatus for) heat sealing a container comprises conveying a filled container 4, having a loosely located cover 5, past a table to upper and lower dies 6, 2 where a reciprocating plate 9 receives and lowers the container 4 into the lower die 2 whereupon the upper die 6 descends to firmly, locate the cover 5, any contents expelled in so doing being washed away by water ejected from an annular pipe 10. The upper die 6 may have a compressed air chamber 19 to minimize water penetration to the cover or instead, the upper and/or lower die may be fitted with rubber rings, e.g. in a groove (13), Fig. 5 (not shown). The container 4 is then raised by the plate 9 and conveyed by two reciprocating parallel arms to upper and lower electrically heated platens (22), (23), Fig. 2 (not shown), where it is lowered as before to heatseal the cover, before final conveyance to a table (24). The cover 5 and container 4 may respectively be a laminate of aluminium foil with polypropylene and polyethylene or vice versa.
