Abstract

1376207 Sealing containers H W PFEIFFER [trading as OHLER EISENWERK THEOB PFEIFFER] 29 March 1972 [2 April 1971] 14890/72 Heading B8C An aluminium foil container 1 is closed by folding an outer region of a flange surrounding the container over on to the edge of a thermoplastics material lid 3 which is supported on the inner region of the flange, and then pressing a peripheral V-shaped bead in the overlapping layers of flange and lid. During the pressing out of the bead, heat is applied to plastify the edge of the lid. An apparatus for so closing the container comprises a first vertically reciprocating device (6, Fig. 2) for folding the flange on to the lid 3 and a second device, Fig. 1, for pressing out the bead and heating the lid. The second device comprises a vertically reciprocable pressure frame 12 having a shaped pressure bar 13, and a fixed, electrically heated matrix frame 14 containing a vertically reciprocable platform 15. When containers and lids are supplied to and discharged from the second device, the components are in the relative positions shown on the left-hand side of Fig. 1, and when forming the bead and heating the lid the components assume the positions shown on the right-hand side of Fig. 1. In a preferred embodiment the first and second devices are combined ina multiple tool.
