Abstract
1,258,372. Coating carbon and graphite with transition metals &c. SIGRI ELEKTROGRAPHIT G.m.b.H. Jan.20, 1970, No. 2810/70. Heading C7F. A graphite or carbon article is coated with Si, B or a transition metal by heating at 700 to 1400‹C. whilst in contact with a powder mixture of the coating element, an inorganic oxide, nitride or carbide, and a metal or alkyl halide, e.g. Na, K, Al, Zn, Pb, Cd, Sn, Ce, Ti, Zr, Cr, Mn or Fe halides. The transition metal may be e.g. Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta, Mo, W, Pt, Ir or Ru. The oxide, nitride or carbide may be of Si, Mg, Ca, Al, Ti, Zr or Hf. The coated articles may be subsequently heated at 500 to 1000‹C. In an atmosphere containing carbon, nitrogen or oxygen. The halides may be used as a liquid or gaseous stream instead of as a powder. In examples a graphite plate may be first coated with Nb and then with Ru, and a graphite electrode is coated with titanium silicide.
