Abstract
1,163,615. Silicide coatings on niobium alloys; siliconizing by pack-cementation. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. Oct.7, 1966 [Oct. 23, 1965], No.45039/66. Headings C7A and C7F. An oxidation resistant coating for Nb alloys containing at least 35% Nb consists of NbSi 2 modified by 7 to 35% of the coating of Ti with or without V and/or Cr. The coating is formed on a Nb alloy substrate containing 12 to 65% of the metal modifier (Ti with or without V and/or Cr) by subjecting the substrate to an environment produced by heating a mixture of powders comprising Si, halide salt and inert filler. E. g. the substrate may be subjected to a two-cycle pack-cementation process embedded in a siliconizing pack of composition 17% Si, 3% NaF and 80% Al 2 O 3 powders at 2200‹F. NbSi 2 coatings containing 13 to 28% Ti are produced by siliconizing Nb alloy substrates containing 23 to 55% Ti NbSi 2 coatings containing 4 to 26% Ti and either 2 to 6% V or 2 to 15% Cr (total modifier being 7 to 35%) are produced by siliconizing Nb alloy substrates containing 6 to 50% Ti and either 3 to 12% V or 3 to 29% Cr (total modifier being 12 to 65%). The substrate may contain 3 to 25% Ti, 4 to 29% Cr and 3 to 12% V, and the coating 2 to 13% Ti, 3 to 16% Cr and 2 to 6% V. Examples of substrate alloys outside the range above specified are: - (a) 60Nb - 20Ta - 15W - 5Mo (as comparison alloy without Ti modifier); (b) 96 Nb - 3 Ti - 1 Cr; (c) 94 Nb - 3 Ti - 3 V; (d) 94 Nb - 3 Ti - 3 Cr; (e) 93 Nb - 4 Ti - 3 V; (f) 91 Nb - 3 Ti - 6 Cr; (g) 90 Nb - 9 Ti - 1 Cr; (h) 39 Nb - 25 Ti - 30 Cr - 6 V; (i) 91 Nb - 3 Ti - 3 Cr - 3 V; and (j) 39 Nb - 21 Ti - 20 Ta - 15 W - 5Mo. The preferred substrate is Nb - 6 Ti - 9 V.
