Abstract
1,242,709. Bleaching cellulosic pulp. PULP & PAPER RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF CANADA. 2 Dec., 1969 [16 Dec., 1968], No. 59738/68. Heading D1P. Fibrous cellulosic pulp, e.g. that obtained by the kraft and sulphite process is bleached by contacting a high consistency (i.e. of about 15% by weight) pulp in the form of fluffed or shredded fibres with gaseous chlorine monoxide. The pulp preferably has at least 15% by weight cellulosic content. Throughout the reaction, which may last for 1-60 minutes, the pH of the pulp is maintained in the range 3.5-5.5 and the temperature between 20‹C and 50‹C. Degradation in the viscosity of the pulp is reduced by including ammonia or sulphonic acid in the pulp, or up to 0.05% by weight chlorine dioxide in the chlorine monoxide. The chlorine monoxide may be diluted with a non-reactive gas, e.g. air to a partial pressure below 253 mm. of mercury.
