Abstract

1,171,878. Reconstituted tobacco. KIMBERLY-CLARK CORP. 2 May, 1968, No. 20943/68. Heading A2C. [Also in Division D2] A reconstituted tobacco sheet, which on smoking produces less tar than normal tobacco, comprises a porous paper-like web impregnated with tobacco extract material, the web comprising tobacco fibres whose looseness of bonding is such that the void fraction of the sheet, is substantially uniform throughout the sheet, and is at least 45 per cent. The void fraction is defined as the volume, per unit volume of the sheet, that is occupied by labyrinthine passages and voids therein. The sheet is produced by modifying the normal making process by: reducing the beating of the tobacco fibres; introduction of minor amounts of non-bonding fibrous or particulate matter to the fibre slurry, e.g. unbleached kraft hardwood fibres, cotton linters, or calcium carbonate; addition to the web making stock, or to the wet web, of volatile organic liquids, of which a mixture of acetone and xylene is exemplified, to reduce hydrogen bonding during drying out; or minimising the compaction of the web and bonding of the fibres by means such as using minimal restraint during drying or reducing the wet pressing.
