Abstract

1,241,052. Carboxylic acids. B.P. CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 6 Oct., 1969 [15 Aug., 1968], No. 38974/68. Heading C2C. Isoparaffins are reacted with formic acid in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid and in the absence of a hydride acceptor to yield neo-acids. Acyclic or alicyclic paraffins are used and are preferably added to the sulphuric acid followed by the formic acid. Examples describe the reaction of 2: 2: 4-trimethyl pentane, iso-octane and isopentane to form the corresponding neo-acids.
