Abstract

1,248,923. Di-neo-carboxylic acids. BP CHEMICALS Ltd. 19 June, 1969 [29 June, 1968; 6 Jan., 1969], Nos. 31222/68 and 778/69. Heading C2C. Di-neo-carboxylic acids are prepared by reacting an α,α<SP>1</SP>-dialkyl substituted monoolefine with formic acid in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid or with carbon monoxide in the presence of a mineral or Lewis acid. The iso-alkyl carbon atoms are separated by not less than 3 carbon atoms, preferably with the double bond not in a terminal or subterminal position, and with not more than 20 carbons and the alkyl substituents with 1-9 carbons, e.g. 2,7-dimethyloctene-4. Examples describe the preparation of 2:2:7:7-tetramethyl suberic acid.
