Abstract
1,232,253. Seaming non-metallic sheet material; absorbent laminates. VEREINIGTE PAPIERWERKE SCHICKEDANZ & CO. 30 Aug., 1968 [1 Sept., 1967], No. 41619/68. Headings B5K and B5N. [Also in Divisions A5 and B8] A sanitary napkin pad 1, Fig. 1, is sealed in an envelope 3 of cellulose wadding or similar material, with a layer 2 of thermoplastics material such as polyethylene which is thin relative to the thickness of the pad being used to seal the ends of the envelope and a longitudinal seam 4. In a method, Fig. 3, of manufacturing the napkin, webs of the foil 2 and the envelope 3 run respectively over and under a series of absorbent pads 1 cut from a block web and the wadding is wrapped over at approximately position 3<SP>1</SP> such that the foil 2 lies on that side of the pad over which the envelope is closed. Closure is effected by means of heat and/or pressure applied by welding jaws 6, 6<SP>1</SP> to the portions of the envelopes between the pads. The said jaws 6, 6<SP>1</SP> soften the thermoplastic foil and cause it to adhere to the envelope. The portions between each pair of towels are then cut transversely by a knife 7. The envelope may be similarly sealed along the seam 4.
