987,845. Porous packages. BARD-PARKER CO. Inc. March 16, 1964, No. 10999/64. Heading B8C. At least one of the two sheets 12, 14 enclosing an article 18 to be sterilized is of fibrous material permitting the passage of steam or gas, but not of bacteria; the margins of the sheets are joined by a sealable heat seal formed by an adhesive having two components, one a thermoplastic composition which is softened by heat during autocleaving and the other a thermosetting material strengthened by irreversible bonds formed by heating. A suitable fibrous material is virgin abaca which may be wet-strength treated. The adhesive may be made from 60-70% polyvinylchloride and 40-30% acrylonitrile-butadiene-copolymer. The adhesive is applied by a roll in a pattern which leaves areas of the sheet unsealed, or is applied so thinly as not to seal the interstices between the fibres. A corrosion inhibitor may be cooked on the sheet before the adhesive is applied. The package may be made from a single sheet folded over and sealed around the article, or in the case of two separate sheets one of them may be a polyester film. The sheets may be sealed together so as to leave tabs 30, 32 which enable the package to be easily opened.
