Abstract

1,231,934. Coating with Pt and/or Pd and Pb. VARTA A.G. April 23, 1969 [April 25, 1968], No.20696/69. Heading C7F. [Also in Division H1] An electrode comprises a porous supporting body of metal or carbon, which is provided with a catalytic surface coating containing by weight 70-99% Pt and/or Pd and from 1 to 30% Pb. The support may contain Ni, Fe or C or heavy metal carbides. In one embodiment a support consisting of sintered Ni powder is coated with an alloy of Ni and Al, from which the Al is dissolved out, prior to applying the catalytic surface layer. The layer is applied by drawing a heated solution containing hexachloroplatinic acid, palladium chloride, lead acetate and nitric acid through the porous support. The nickel salts produced from this precipitation process are washed away. In another embodiment a porous carbon support is impregnated with an aqueous solution of cobalt or nickel nitrate which is then reduced with hydrogen prior to the application of the above catalytic layer.
