Abstract

Carbon electrodes for use in electrochemical processes involving the ionization of a gas supplied to the electrode, e.g. hydrogen and oxygen, are prepared by adding suitable finely divided metallic catalysts, e.g. gold, platinum, palladium, rhodium and nickel, to activated carbon powder, treating the whole with a hydrophobic binding material, and moulding under sufficient pressure to produce a porous body of the desired shape. The catalyst may be added by impregnating the carbon powder with a solution of a salt of the metal and heating to reduce the salt to the metal. Hydrophobic binding material may be polytetrafluorethylene, which may be added to the impregnated carbon powder as an emulsion, and then precipitated thereon by the addition of acetone. The resulting suspension is then filtered, washed and dried, and ground to a coarse powder, which is moulded at a pressure of 1-2 tons/sq. inch to produce a highly porous body. The body thus obtained may be sintered at 400 DEG C. for 2 minutes in order to increase its mechanical strength.
