Abstract

An electrode is formed by depositing carbon on a base of sintered iron, nickel or cobalt by heating in a hydrocarbon atmosphere e.g. methane, propane, ethane, hexane, dodecane, eicosane and cyclohexane. The sintered base may be made by decomposing the metal carbonyl at 50 to 250 DEG C., mixing the metal powder with a gelation agent and hot rolling. It has a mean pore diameter of 5 to 25 microns and a porous volume of 40 to 80% of its apparent volume. Prior to the carbon deposition, nickel or cobalt may be electrolessly or electrolytically deposited on the sintered base by impregnating with a solution of a Ni or Co salt. Silver, gold or elements of the groups of the periodic table including platinum or iron may be deposited on the carbon.
