Abstract
1444130 Ni-coated powder; sintered bodies COUNCIL OF SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH 2 Oct 1973 46027/73 Headings C7D and C7F Powder of titanium oxide, magnesium oxide, aluminium oxide, amorphous carbon, graphite or iron is coated with a solution of a Ni salt, dried, and subsequently reduced in a hydrogen-containing atmosphere or in H2 to produce Ni-coated powder. Powder of size 150 to 60Á may be coated with aqueous Ni sulphate, chloride, nitrate or formate; the solvent is evaporated, the salt-coated powder is optionally heated at 300-400C to produce a Ni oxide coating, and the coating is reduced to Ni at 900-1000C, e.g. in cracked ammonia; the weight ratio core: Ni may be 0À2:1 to 5:1. The coated cores may be mixed with 0À2-2 weight parts Ni powder, e.g. carbonyl Ni, and the mixed powder sintered on to a perforated sheet or wire net of Ni or Ni-plated stainless steel, to make a plaque for an alkaline battery.
