Abstract

1,183,317. Radiographic films. GEVAERTAGFA N.V. 30 May, 1967 [1 July, 1966], No. 29579/66. Heading H5R. [Also in Division G2] A photographic - .material contains an X-ray sensitive silver halide emulsion layer, the sensitivity of which to ultraviolet and visible light has been reduced without reducing the X-ray sensitivity to less than 70% of its original value by incorporating into the emulsion layer 1-100 mg. per mole of silver halide of a compound of the formula wherein R 1 is alkyl (including aralkyl) or aryl, any of which may be substituted, an unsaturated aliphatic radical or cycloalkyl, Z completes a heterocyclic nucleus chosen from a list of such nuclei including benzothiazole, pyridine and quinoline, L is methine including substituted methine, Ar is a bivalent aromatic radical, n is 1 or 2, X- is an anion but is not present when R 1 contains an anionic group and each of R 2 and R 3 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aryl, or cycloalkyl or together with the nitrogen atom form a heterocyclic nucleus. The compounds also act as antifcggants. They may be added to an emulsion at any time before coating e.g. during the formation of the halide grains or during physical or chemical ripening. The emulsion may also contain alkylene oxide condensation products or polymers, onium compounds, sulphur sensitizers, reduction sensitizers or noble metal sensitizers, stabilizers and antifoggants especially tetrazaindenes, and the photographic material may also contain a dye and U.V.-absorbing substance, e.g. a yellow dye, in the emulsion layer, top-coat or protect ive layer and/or in the base or a backing layer, to further reduce the sensitivity to light and ultraviolet.
