Abstract

1362859 Polycyclic heterocyclic quaternary salts EASTMAN KODAK CO 29 Oct 1971 [30 Oct 1970] 50340/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division G2] The invention comprises a compound of the formula wherein Z represents the non-metallic atoms necessary to complete an unsubstituted or substituted heterocyclic nucleus containing a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring including the quaternary nitrogen atom, the additional atoms of said ring being selected from C, N, O, S and Se atoms, each of R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> is H, alkyl which may be substituted or aryl, n is 1 or 2 and R, when n is 1, is H, alkyl or alkoxy which may be substituted, carbalkoxy, aryl, aryloxy or carbamido, or, when n is 2, is a C 1 to C 4 alkylene group and X- is an anion. They may be obtained by heating in an inert organic solvent therefor of moderate polarity, a quaternary salt of the formula to effect ring closure. Examples are given for the production of the compounds. They are useful as fogging agents for photographic silver halide emulsions.
