In a method and apparatus for continuously patenting wire directly from the rolling mill the wire is cooled to about 800‹ C. and is then supplied by a laying tube to a coil collecting basket located in a fluidized-bed container where substantially isothermal treatment occurs, cooling to the transformation range being effected during immersion of individual turns in the bed. The collecting basket may be formed by a stationary frame, the bed container being lowerable to permit removal of the complete coil as shown in Fig. 1, wire D is fed by laying arm 12 into fluidized bed 2 where it is formed into a coil between the uprights 10, 11 which are mounted in the bed container 1. The bed may consist of particles of clay, sand, ferrosilicon or iron powder, and may be heated or cooled by an appropriate fluid circulated through pipes 8 or by externally recirculating the bed material through suitable heating or cooling means. When a coil is complete container 1 is lowered by ram 3, and remaining bed material removed from the coil by air jets C and vibrator V. In a modification, Fig. 4 the bed is formed in an elongated vessel 31 through which are conveyed a series of coil-collecting carriages 34, which are in turn arrested under the laying arm.
