Abstract
In a process of hot rolling metal powders such as U. Pu, Th, Al, Ti, Cu, Sn, powders at least 1 mm. in diameter are preheated to above the recrystallization temperature whilst being agitated to prevent coherence and then hot rolled to form sheet, strip or bars. As shown in Fig. 1 the apparatus comprises a sealed container 10 which may be evacuated or filled with an inert gas, a feed hopper 18 and an outlet 20 which directs the metal powder into an inclined furnace 21 which is rotated, vibrated or reciprocated by a motor and pulley system, the heated powder then flowing into the rolls 50 which may be heated or cooled, the finished rolled compact being directed from the rolls via guides 61 and 62. The roll gap is adjustable and the powder flow from the hopper to the furnace and to the rolls may be controlled by suitable metering valves. Metal <PICT:0964002/C6-C7/1> powder mixtures and mixtures of metals with ceramics may also be processed.
