Abstract
Hot rod from a rolling mill is continuously coiled into a cooled fluidized bed where it is retained until the desired structure has been retained and is then removed. The process is particularly applied to steel containing 0.4 to 0.85% carbon which is coiled into a bed held at such a temperature that a fine pearlite structure is formed; the bed temperature may be such that the rod cools from the A3 point to the upper limit of the sorbitic range in not more than four seconds, and is maintained in the sorbitic range for at least ten seconds before removal. The Specification also claims apparatus consisting of a fluidized bed device and a laying head; there may also be included a perforated container which may be removably located in the bed and into which the rod is coiled.
