Abstract
1,158,485. Waveguides; coaxial cables. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. 7 Sept., 1966 [1 Oct., 1965], No. 39934/66. Heading H1A and H1W. A flexible, non-circular waveguide, intended for propagation of linearly-polarized modes, consists of a body of dielectic material provided with an internal conductive coating and corrugated externally. The dielectric may be a polyolefine, e.g.. P.V.C. or PTFE and the coating copper, silver or aluminium. The corrugations may be circumferential or helical and may have a sinusoidal, parabolic or cos<SP>2</SP> profile. The specification gives details of the dimensions of the corrugations in terms of the propagated wavelength and the internal cross-sectional dimensions. The internal coating may have a thickness equal to several times the skin depth and the dielectric material may be loaded with an absorptive material, e.g. graphite. A further conductive layer may be applied to the external surface of the guide and the space between the two coatings used for propagation in a coaxial mode. The internal coating may be sprayed with a varnish and the external coating may be provided with a sheath of material which is resistant to abrasion or corrosion. The internal cross-section may have the shape of an ellipse or a rectangle with rounded corners. Other shapes described result from modifications of a circle, e.g. by flattening at one or more points or by providing one or more internal ridges.
