Abstract

1,140,866. Bearings; friction gearing. ERNEST SCRAGG & SONS Ltd. 28 March, 1966 [8 April, 1965], No. 14933/65. Headings F2A and F2Q. [Also in Division D1] A false twist tube is urged into engagement with driving and/or supporting means by differential gas pressure transverse of the tube. In Fig. 2 a twist tube 12 has driving and/or supporting rollers 13, two or more on each of parallel shafts 14. A part cylindrical chamber 15 connected to suction means is positioned about the tube, radial lips 22 being provided to restrict the inward flow of gas. In Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the chamber 15 is on the side of the tube remote from the contacting rollers and is connected to a source of high pressure. The chamber may be mounted on a swingable carriage or resilient mounting so as to allow the insertion and extraction of tube 12. In Fig. 5 (not shown), the end walls of the chamber closely approach surfaces (25) on the tube which are at an angle to the axis of the tube, so that the tube is axially located. In Fig. 6 tube 12 bears against rollers 13a mounted on a single shaft 14a. The tube has a drum-shaped central portion 12a which is closely approached by the cylindrical wall of chamber 15. The chamber is offset with respect to the plane passing through the axis of tube 12 and shaft 14a. A restrictor is provided in the supply line to each chamber 15 so that should one tube of an associated group e.g. in a crimping machine be removed the resulting air flow is restricted. The gas flow cools the tube.
