A washing or spin-drying machine comprises a drum rotatable about a horizontal axis within a liquid container 1 which container is suspended by resilient elements or rubber or the like and leaf springs so arranged that the differences between the natural frequencies of vibrations in the three degrees of freedom of the resilient elements are minimized by the springs. As shown, Fig. 1, container 1 along with the drive motor 2 are carried on leaf springs 3 mounted at their ends on resilent elements 4 carried on brackets 5 in the machine casing. In a modification, Fig. 2, convex leaf springs 8 each comprising a plurality of layers of springs are arranged substantially parallel to the axis of the washing drum, damping being increased by friction coatings on the springs. Both ends of each leaf spring are connected by resilient elements 12 to brackets 15. In another arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), leaf springs (18) are mounted with their ends between pairs of resilient elements (20) and, mounted at their centres, bent springs (19) whose ends engage friction coatings on springs (18) and whose centres are spaced therefrom by spacers 17 and support the container 1. In the arrangement of, Fig. 4, leaf springs 21 rest on elastic support means 4 and carry on friction coatings 16 shorter leaf springs 22 which support container 1. Springs 24 are connected to the top of container 1, or alternatively rubber and metal elements are provided. In a further arrangement, Fig. 7 (not shown) the arrangement of Fig. 4 is modified so that the axis of rotation of the drum passes through the space between springs 21, 22.
