Documents such as cheques 9 are fed from a stack to printing mechanism 10 of an adding or accounting machine, adapted to print each document in a sequence of operations controlled by a programme control device comprising a support, shown as a drum 5, intermittently movable through a set of stations associated with the operations, each document fed actuating a pair of lugs 150 so as to cause a first cyclically operated mechanism, including a clutch 8, to move the support through said set of stations, the documents being fed by a second cyclically operated mechanism, including a clutch 59 and shaft 44, which is conditioned for operation by a shiftable member 86 controlled by the support when near the end of its cycle. Rotation of the shaft 44 causes further rollers 131 to be moved against the stack of cheques in a container (24) and feed the end cheque sideways, upwards in Fig. 2, similarly rotating rollers 117, 119 preventing double feed. Prior to sheet separation, a roller 106 moves the sheet downwards to align it with the container bottom, and a plate 26 is moved against the left side of the stack under the control of a crank arm 34 on a shaft 36 which is moved half a revolution at a time. The feed is initiated by a key (57) which controls a clutch 46 actuating the shaft 36, and a second operation of the key withdraws the plate and stops the feed by means of a pin 79 on the shaft 36 moving the member 86 to a position where it is ineffective to close a clutch 59 for the shaft 49. Each cheque is forwarded to feed rollers 11, 12 and thence against the lugs 150 and to printing position.
