Abstract

1,237,380. Printing apparatus. FARRINGTON DATA PROCESSING Ltd. 18 Nov., 1968 [17 Nov., 1967], No. 52366/67. Heading B6C. A machine for printing on the individual sheets of a bound book 14 comprises means for supporting the book 14 with its spine horizontal and its pages horizontal, a page turner which successively turns down the pages for printing and a movable print apparatus. The printing apparatus consists of a bed 16 bearing on an inverted plate and number box, covered on their lower surface with carbon paper or other copying material, and a travelling impression cylinder 25. The bed 16 and cylinder 25 are mounted on horizontal slides, and are moved by linkages from cranks on rotating shafts 18, 19 between the printing positions shown with full lines in Fig. 1 and an inoperative position shown with dotted lines. The book 14 may be a cheque book, with pages which are to be printed on with a magnetic iron oxide. As shaft 10 rotates rubber pad 12 engages the sheets in succession, pushing them laterally free of retaining fingers 6, 8 and spring-loaded button 13. A jet of air from nozzle 7 assists the sheet in moving downwards to position 146, where it is printed on. After printing the sheet falls away to position 14c. Photo-electric control means prevent operation of the printing apparatus when no sheet is in position 14b.
