Abstract
1,086,321. Testing tension in cables. WHITE FISH AUTHORITY. Oct. 9, 1964 [July 10, 1963], No. 27423/63. Heading G1W. An instrument for measuring the tension in a cable 58 comprises a pair of spaced components 11 adapted to contact one side of the cable, an intermediate component 55 adapted to contact the opposite side of the cable and adjustable to vary the gap between the components so as to provide a zero setting for the particular cable, a tensioning device to cause bowing of the cable over the intermediate component, and a strain gauge responsive to straightening loads applied to the length of cable bowed between the spaced components. In use, a wheel 55 is first moved to its limit downwards by turning an upper tube 18 and the wheel is then removed. The towing warp or cable 58 to be tested is introduced within a yoke 51 to engage the wheels 11, and the wheel 55 is replaced. The upper tube 18 is then turned until the wheel 55 contacts the cable. A handle 28 is turned through 180‹ from the position shown in Fig. 1 and an eccentric wheel 26 causes the inner shank 13 Fig. 2 (not shown) to be raised along with the tube 12 (not shown), the yoke 51 and the wheel 55 thus bowing the cable. The tension in the cable tends to straighten it out causing a tensional strain in a link 44 (not shown) which incorporates a metal foil strain gauge.
