Abstract
864,907. Linear-dimension gauges. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. July 20, 1959 [July 28, 1958], No. 24215/58. Class 106 (2). To measure the distance, X, between spaced members 11, 12, a probe 2 having a flattened periphery is used. It is inserted between the members 11, 12 and turned to touch them both at A, B. It is then turned about an axis 1 perpendicular to the section shown to touch both members at C, D respectively. The angle α through which it is turned is a measure of the distance X. The probe may be elliptical as shown or of any other shape which differs substantially from a circle and whose width and length are respectively less than and greater than the gap between the members. The probe may have this shape along a considerable length of the axis 1 about which it is turned or may be mounted on the end of a rod-like member of a diameter less than the width of the probe.
