A device for bringing a measuring gauge A into and removing it from a position in which it measures a workpiece B comprises a number of articulated arms controlled by electrical or hydraulic means 7. The connection P between two of the arms, one of which is constituted by the gauge A itself, comprises a lost-motion device so that when the gauge is presented to the workpiece it can adjust itself on the workpiece without affecting the accuracy of the measurement.
