Abstract
1,078,393. Once-through steam generators; superheaters. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. April 8, 1964 [April 8, 1963], No. 13954/63. Heading F4A. A once-through forced circulation steam generator has one or more tubular superheater sections S, each connected to a tubular evaporating section E, arranged to provide for a steamwater mixture a flow path having a length 28, 32 in which high speed turbulent flow occurs followed by a length 34 in which lower speed flow occurs. The change in flow speed is due to a change in the cross-sectional area of the flow path available either due to a change in the number of tubes through which the mixture flows or a change in their diameter or both. The tubular elements 10, 34 are arranged in vertical hexagonal clusters joined by tube plates 12, 20, 22 and intermediate headers 14, 24 to form preheating, evaporating and superheating sections P, E and S respectively, the tubes 10, 34 being kept evenly separated by spacer plates 44. After parallel fluid flow through the preheating and evaporating sections, the steam and water mixture flows through central tube 28 of the superheating section S, is deflected back through the two tubes 32 by member 30 and then flows out through the remaining sixteen tubes 34 of the superheating section. The cross-sectional area of tube 28 equals the sum of the areas of the tubes 32 but is less than the sum of the areas of tubes 34. All tubes except tube 28 contain helical inserts 40 to promote turbulence.
