Abstract

A refractory composition for lining oxygen steelmaking furnaces comprises a magnesia-containing refractory grain, particularly magnesite, dolomite, or mixtures thereof, tar or pitch, and a thermosetting resin, preferably in the proportions by weight 100 parts refractory grain, 2-8 parts tar or pitch, and 1-7 parts thermosetting resin. The latter may be a phenolic, urea-formaldehyde, alkyd, polyester, furane, melainure, epoxy, polysaccharide, silicone or urethane resin, or a mixture thereof. The composition may also contain 1-4 parts by weight carbon black. The resin is set by heating at 300-500 DEG F. for 6-24 hours. Furnace linings may be produced by coking the composition in situ at 2000-2600 DEG F.
