Abstract
A process for the manufacture of low or medium carbon ferro-manganese comprises heating a charge of limestone or burnt lime, a manganese ore and steel scrap to a temperature of 1300 DEG -1600 DEG C. in a fuel fired rotary furnace, adding molten manganese silicide, rotating the furnace until the reaction is complete and tapping the ferro-manganese produced. Some of the limestone or burnt lime may be replaced by raw or burnt dolomite and solid manganese silicide, manganese ore or steel may be added to the furnace while it is being rotated.
