Abstract

The basic refractory lining of a metallurgical furnace comprises a mixture of a major proportion of fired dolomite grains retained on a 35 mesh screen and a minor proportion of magnesia passing 35 mesh with a small amount of non-aqueous, cokable carbonaceous bonding agent. Up to 40% of the dolomite may be replaced by 4-10 mesh magnesia, chromite alumina or spinels. At least 30% of the fine magnesia should pass 100 mesh and the whole comprises magnesia stabilized by heating so that the free lime comprises with silica, iron oxide &c. The carbonaceous bonding material which comprises 4-10 parts by weight of the mixture may be tar, pitch or ashphalt. Up to 3% of a surface active agent such as a fatty acid, a long-chain aliphatic amide or amine or a sulphonated or sulphated aliphatic compound with at least six carbon atoms may also be added. The material may be applied to a furnace in situ or may be formed into bricks or blocks by moulding in a vibratory press.
