Abstract
855,626. Coking pitch. SOUTH AFRICAN IRON & STEEL INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION Ltd. Aug. 21, 1957, No. 26448/57. Class 55 (2). [Also in Group XX] Pitch, which is suitable for coking in normal coke ovens, or may be used as a binder in the manufacture of carbon bricks or linings for blast furnaces, for cementing carbon bricks in a blast furnace, as an ingot mould lacquer or for use as a core compound in foundries, is produced by distilling off volatile products from coal tar or coal tar products or from similar products obtained in the heat treatment of coal, shales or the like carbonaceous materials, until a pitch is obtained as residue having the following properties: volatile matter of 10-20% swelling index of 3-7 preferably 3-4¢, and a stall point at 280-310 C. The stall point is measured by stirring a small hot molten sample of pitch in a can by means of a thermometer or thermocouple while cooling until the material stalls, i.e. becomes too viscous to stir, and reading the tempertaure at this point. Alternatively the temperature is observed at which the previously shiny coking pitch becomes dull. The pitch may be heated by means of submerged combustion, the burner being shut off at 10-15 C. below the optimum temperature, steam being introduced into the burner to drive off the volatile matter until the optimum stage is reached.
