Abstract

1,065,779. Driving bands. MANUFACTURE DE MACHINES DU HAUT-RHIN. Aug. 12, 1964 [Aug. 12, 1963], No. 32877/64. Heading F3A. A projectile comprising a body with a steel driving band has a plurality of cavities formed in that part of the body covered by the driving band, permitting deformation of the band into the cavities. The body (1) is formed with two circumferential channels (3, 4) and a system of grooves (2), the total volume of the grooves being the same as that of the driving band (7) which has edges (9, 8) forced into the channels (3, 4) with lips. (5, 6) of the channels being pressed down over the edges (9, 8). On firing the projectile the grooves accommodate any deformation of the driving band due to rifling etc. The driving band is made from mild steel or cold worked mild steel plated with nickel or German silver.
