[Class 9 (i)] Driving bands are attached by cutting inclined spaced grooves e in the projectile, slightly reducing in diameter the intervening portion, cutting spaced grooves a in the intervening portion, and pressing the driving band of softer material into the space between and encircling the end grooves. The band material may wholly or only in part fill the grooves a. The ribs between the grooves may be knurled as at h. Instead of knurling, cross-grooves b, Fig. 6, may be provided to prevent relative rotation between the band and the projectile, or the grooves a may be sinuous.
