Abstract

1,064,260. Feeding webs. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Jan. 27, 1965 [Feb. 6, 1964], No. 3588/65. Heading B6B. In a mechanism for feeding and registering continuous webs such as webs of cigar bands (W, Fig. 3) which occur in a repetitious printed and cut shape arrangement, a web contour sensing device having contour sensing arms is provided, which senses and positions each band for cutting and delivering to a banding and/or wrapping station. The sensing device may be the sole means for sensing the web in the longitudinal registering mechanism, but may be associated with a photo-electric type of web registering device which is maintained in an inoperative condition until that portion of the web to be registered has been sensed by the contour sensing device, whereupon the photo-electric cell mechanism is energized and made ready to register that particular portion of the web. Fig. 1 illustrates apparatus having a web contour sensing device S used in conjunction with a photo-electric detector P. The web W is advanced by a pair of nip rollers 10, 12, passes over a dancer roller 18 and an idler roller 22, and is further advanced by nip rollers 24, 26 to a cam-operated severing device 56. The pairs of nip rollers have a common drive (Figs. 2 and 4) which includes a motor (72), a clutch (72C) and a brake (72B). The sensing device S includes a microswitch (80, Fig. 6) pivotally supported on a bolt 82 and has two sensing fingers (88 and 90), finger (90) being pivotally mounted at (92) to the microswitch housing for movement relative to the finger (88). The photo-electric detector P includes a light source 66 and a photo-electric cell 68. In operation, during the major portion of each web feeding cycle, the photo-electric detector P remains inactive so that a control relay switch (122, Fig. 4) is de-energized. Contacts (126) therefore remain closed and the clutch (72C) engaged to transmit the drive to the nip rollers 10, 12 and 24, 26. When the shoes 94 on the fingers 88 and 90 sense the widest portion of the web (Fig. 3) the contacts of microswitch (80, Fig. 4) will be closed thereby energizing the photo-electric detector P. The photo-electric cell will fire when the focal point (77, Fig. 3) of the photoelectric detector coincides with the translucent area (79) of the web after the opaque area (78). This causes energization of relay (122) thereby engaging brake (72B) and disengaging clutch (72C). The web is thereby registered for cut off and delivery to the banding and wrapping station. The web feed is resumed immediately after cut off by a cam-operated switch (128) interrupting the supply to the photo-electric detector P. The cam (132) of switch (128) is mounted on the shaft 64 of the cam 116 of the severing device 56, Fig. 1. In alternative embodiments (Figs. 5 and 7-13), the photoelectric detector P is not used, and the microswitch in the detector S is of a double-pole type. One pole is used for the clutch circuit and the other for the brake circuit.
