Abstract

1,021,557. Wrapping. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. Dec. 6, 1963 [Dec. 6, 1962; Dec. 10, 1962], No. 48286/63. Heading B8C. The panels 20-23, Fig. 8, of a wrapper have tubular supports 48, 52 at their edges which retain an article wrapped therein. In one embodiment the blank of Fig. 1 is folded about score lines 33-36 to produce the channel strip 52a (see Fig. 12), the areas 45, 49, Fig. 1, being laid against or glued to panels 20-23. These panels are then folded to the shape of Fig. 8, an article, e.g. a bar of soap, is inserted, panel 20 is folded to close the package, and flap 24 glued to panel 23. In other embodiments the cut outs 37 are replaced by diamond-shaped, or triangular holes (see Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) and in the latter case the ends of alternate tubular supports abut the side panels to give the package greater rigidity. In a machine, Fig. 12, for wrapping soap bars 53 in the channel strips 52a, the soap, clamped between holders 76, 77, advances to contact a previously fed strip 52a and carry it via a roller 74 which glues flap 24, and bars 78, 79 which fold in panels 20, 21, to tucker members 80, 81 which fold in flap 23 and hold flap 24 in position whilst the glue sets. The completed package is ejected by belts 85, 86. In an alternative machine, Fig. 14, channel strips 52a are fed by rollers 95, 96 to the soap bars 53 clamped between holders 90, 91. A spring loaded nipper 92 on holder 90 is released from a bar 94 as the holders advance, and holds the strip 52a against the soap whilst it is rotated by the holders. During rotation the strip is guided round the soap by a rail 98, whose end 99 tucks tongues 87, 88 on a modified flap into the tubular portions , 48, 52. The completed package is ejected by belts 100-101. In any embodiment the tubular supports may have any cross-section and may have cut out portions for particular articles. An overwrap preferably of transparent film may be applied, and when this is of oriented P.V.C. it may be heat shrunk after application.
