Abstract

1,204,205. Packaging articles. W. R. GRACE & CO. 3 Oct., 1968 [3 Oct., 1967], No. 47064/68. Heading B8C. A process for packing articles in which one or more articles K are wrapped in a sheet B of material comprises the steps of putting the article(s) to be packed on to a supporting table A with one end of the article(s) overhanging the edge of the table, unwinding the sheet B from a roll C mounted below the level of the table A, the sheet passing through a dispensing slot A 1 adjacent the other end of the article(s). The sheet B is passed over the article(s) and is anchored to the table engaging surface thereof adjacent the one end thereof as by clips, adhesives, heat welding, or using the weight of the article(s). The partly wrapped article(s) is/are then passed over the dispensing slot to complete the wrapping of the article(s) and the overlapping flaps of the sheet are secured, the sheet then being cut to allow the removal of the wrapped article(s). In the construction shown, the securing and cutting is effected by a device D which consists of a welding bar D 1 and a knife D 2 . The feed of the sheet vertically of the table is controlled by a braking device G (see especially Figs. 6, 7, not shown), the device being rendered inoperative when the sheet is drawn parallel to the surface of the table. A stop E is provided for positioning the article(s) to be wrapped on the table. In a further embodiment the device D and a conveyer system are actuated automatically by cams after a stop switch has been engaged by a wrapped article (Figs. 8, 9, not shown).
