Abstract

Non-coking varieties of coal, or grades with poor coking qualities, are improved by mixing with aromatic bituminous substances (A) with an atomic H:C ratio of 1.1 max., b. pt. 350 degrees C min., and softening pt. in the 100-400 degrees C range, obtd. by heat treatment of coal tar, petroleum distillation residues and/or solvent extraction residues of tarry or pitch-like character. The amt. of (A) is 1-40, pref. 1-30% of the wt. of coal, and a coal-tar or road-tar in an amt. of 1-20, pref. 1-10% is pref. also added. Output of high quality coke of good stability and strength as required for iron and steel prodn. is increased by the use of coals which are otherwise unsuitable.
