Abstract

1397022 Isotropic carbon KOPPERS CO Inc 6 March 1973 [6 March 1972] 10929/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] Isotropic carbon is obtained from a hydrocarbon material i.e. a distillate of petroleum or coal tar or an extract thereof by intimately contacting the hydrocarbon material with a gas containing elemental oxygen at a temperature in the range 250‹ to 420‹ C. until at least 0À5 standard cubic feet of elemental oxygen per pound of hydrocarbon material is consumed and the hydrocarbon material is converted into a pitch like substance that will yield isotropic carbon on carbonization and carbonizing said pitch like material at a temperature in excess of 800‹ C. in an inert atmosphere to convert it to isotropic carbon. Preferably the gas used is air. The pitch-like substance obtained after treating with oxygen containing gas was distilled to remove low boiling components before the material was carbonized. The temperature during oxygen treatment may be between 350‹ and 370‹ C. and the pressure used may be in the range 80-100 p.s.i. gauge.
