Abstract

1451060 Isotropic carbon fibres KOPPERS CO Inc 5 Dec 1973 [2 March 1973] 56344/73 Heading C1A Isotropic carbon fibres are prepared from a straight run petroleum distillate boiling between 200‹ and 600‹ C. or from a catalytically cracked recycle petroleum distillate boiling between 200 and 500‹ C., by (a) reacting the petroleum distillate with elemental oxygen at an elevated temperature until at least 0À5 standard cubic feet of oxygen has reacted per pound of petroleum distillate, which is converted to a pitch like substance which yields isotropic carbon upon subsequent carbonization; (b) forming a fibre from the pitch-like substance; and (c) carbonizing the fibre in an inert atmosphere at a temperature in excess of 800‹ C. The pitch-like substance may be distilled, prior to forming a fibre, to remove low-boiling constituents, and the formed fibre may be treated with a gas, e.g. air at 130-150‹ C., so that it retains its shape on subsequent carbonization.
