Abstract
1470171 Silicon nitride LUCAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 31 July 1974 [4 Sept 1973] 41404/73 Heading C1A Silicon nitride is produced by heating a powder mixture of silica and carbon at an elevated temperature, and contacting the mixture at said temperature with a nitriding atmosphere containing silicon monoxide. The nitriding atmosphere may be nitrogen and the silicon monoxide may be produced in the nitriding atmosphere by introducing a mixture of silicon and silica into the vessel in which the heating step is performed. The above method is said to give silicon nitride in high yield with a high α-phase content.
