Abstract
A pump assembly comprises a container divided into two compartments 14, 16, Fig. 2, each containing a respective pump 40, 50, e.g. of the centrifugal type shown. Liquid is drawn through a duct 18 and valve assembly 20 into compartment 14 by the suction created therein by pump 40, the suction also keeping the valve assembly 20 open via diaphragm 32 exposed to the closed chamber 14 and to the chamber 16 which is permanently vented to atmosphere at 17. The valve assembly also includes a non-return valve 22. The pump 40 delivers the liquid through conduit 46 into compartment 16 from where it is discharged via conduit 58, Fig. 5, flow-metering valve 82 and outlet 59. Compartment 16 contains a float assembly 60 which opens a valve (70), Fig. 3 (not shown), to directly communicate the compartments 14, 16 with each other through a passage (76) in partition 13, when the liquid level in compartment 16 reaches a predetermined value. Thus, the suction in compartment 14 is neutralized causing closure of valve assembly 20 until the liquid level falls.
