Abstract

An apparatus for maintaining the elevation of a load carrying cross-bar 3 during trimming of a ship's derrick, comprises a pair of cables 10a, 10b supporting the bar 3 between a central auxiliary derrick boom 5 and a pair of main derrick booms la, 1b, the lengths of the cable portions supporting the bar 3 being automatically adjusted by main derrick winches 7a, 7b as the auxiliary winch 6 is operated to move the boom 5. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown) the main derrick winches are each motor driven through a differential gear which is interconnected with the auxiliary winch drive whereby rotation of the latter in one direction results in opposite rotation of the main winches, thereby maintaining the cross-bar in position. The auxiliary winch may be braked whereby the main winches may be operated independently. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown), all the winches are driven by hydraulic motors, and an hydraulic pump is driven by the auxiliary winch and coupled into the hydraulic circuits of the two main winch motors, whereby rotation of the auxiliary winch and therefore the pump, in one direction results in opposite rotation of the main winches.
