Abstract

The packaging machine for wrapping a plastics film around an object, has a cutting mechanism for the film. This film is unwound from a reel (1) and passed between pairs of gripping bars (A, B) with a knife mounted on the upper bar of each pair, the bars being advanced and retracted as the film is stopped past. The film is carried by a belt conveyor (11) underneath and passes under a plate (5) with an opening (105) through it. Each cutting bar assembly has an upper plate carrying a knife blade at the front, with its cutting edge projecting below the base of the plate, and a lower plate under the plastics film, both gripping the film between them to make the cut. The upper plate has a spring loaded pressure plate supported against its underside, which first contacts the surface of the film as the upper plate is forced down.
