Abstract
842,493. Guillotine cutting machines. DICKINSON & CO. Ltd., J. March 2, 1959 [Jan. 15, 1958], No. 1405/58. Class 31 (1). Apparatus for severing batches of superposed sheets of paper or like material into multiple sections comprises at least three complementary pairs of cutter blades, at least one pair operating to sever into sections the superposed sheets fed into the cutting position whilst two other pairs operate simultaneously with the division of the sheets into sections to trim the outer edges of the superposed sheets, clamping means for clamping the sheets during the cutting operation along and on one side of each line of cut, and means for allowing free movement or deflection of the sheets on the opposite side of each line of cut. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises five complementary pairs of cutter blades 13, 15, the blades 13 being carried by a reciprocating head 12 and the blades 15 by a stationary platform 14. Each blade 13 is fixed to a holder 16 which carries a resiliently mounted clamping member 23 which co-operates with a blade 15 to clamp the sections to be cut. Each blade 15 is fixed to a bolster 30 which is formed with a cavity 35 over which the cutting edge of a blade 15 projects slightly, the cavities being arranged to receive areas of the sheets on one side of each cutting line during the cutting operation. Each holder 16, and bolster 30, is adjustable by means of pinions 20, 21, and 32, 33, fixed to a rotatable spindle 22, and 34, and engaging rack teeth 19, and 31, on the head 12, and platform 14. The head 12 is driven by means of cranks 38, 39 from a drive shaft 40. The batches of sheets to be severed into sections are fed by a roller 41, Fig. 4, on to an endless conveyer 42 between pushers 43. The chain 42 is driven intermittently from the shaft 40 by means of gearing 44, 45, 51, 52, 53 and a slotted disc 49 the slots 49<SP>1</SP> of which are engaged in succession by a pin 48 on a disc 47. The roller 41 is driven from the shaft 40 by means of exchangeable gears 58, 59 or 60, 61 according as a single batch, or two or more superposed batches, of sheets are to be fed. In the construction shown, the two outer pairs of blades operate to trim the edges of the sheets and the three intermediate pairs of blades operate to cut the sheets into four sections.
