There is a pressing need for understanding blockchain, cybercrime, and dark web-based fraud. As the world continues to turn digital, uses of cryptocurrencies are becoming mainstream. With this technological adoption becoming a reality, crime is adapting to the times. “Click here for free Bitcoin,” “set up an account and earn 100BTC instantly” are merely anecdotal examples of the ways the act of fraud is innovating. Deeper into this proliferation of technology lies the dark web, where your social security and identity may be offered for a small sum as we speak. Blockchain technology fueled dark web marketplaces' enormous growth, which facilitated identity fraud and many other cybercrimes taking place as we speak. This chapter and its authors aim to provide a thorough yet simplified explanation of these technologies while expressing current trends and theories surrounding dark web fraud trading of fraud guides and the use of social engineering. This chapter aims to explain all aspects of this area of cybercrime for all to understand.

Since gaining its independence in 1968 and the establishment of the Prison Act, there has been increasing recognition that corrections and the welfare of juvenile delinquents in Swaziland has been fraught with a wide range of challenges. In 2013, the Department of Correctional Services, for the first time, undertook a descriptive and exploratory study examining social background patterns of detained juvenile delinquents to establish a profile of juvenile delinquency in Swaziland. Data was collected from all 304 juveniles at Malkerns Industrial School in the rural town of Malkerns. A closed-ended survey with 33 questions was used to collect the data. Overall, the results showed that juvenile offenders in Swaziland have many of the same social challenges as do young offenders in most other parts of the world. The results provided the foundation for a number of recommendations on how Swaziland can consider moving forward in reforming its juvenile justice practices.

To date, the other international handbooks (i.e., International Criminology and European Criminology) are deemed valuable resource texts for anyone who is interested in subject areas. Chapter 45 in the Handbook on International Criminology, is the only chapter that focuses on the state of criminology on China. The authors, Xiu and Tingyao, point out that criminology is China is only about 30-years old but that it has evolved and there is a growing body of research and scholars who are now engaged in criminological research. The three editors of the...

Historically, Canada's corrections system was influenced by former colonial affiliation with England. The British North America Act of 1867 laid the skeleton framework for the correctional model in Canada today. As evidenced in virtually every other jurisdiction around the world, Canada's adult and juvenile correctional philosophy and practices have seen many changes since they were both established. Today, corrections for adults in Canada can be characterized as a system that is oriented toward assisting inmates with rehabilitation and safe reintegration into the community, while for young offenders it has been characterized as representing a modified justice model. Consistent with its past, both correctional models continue to evolve. Keywords: adult corrections; Canada; juvenile corrections

Educating young people on the risks of forced labour is not only one of the most critical duties in eradicating human trafficking, but due to its clandestine nature, it is also one of the most challenging. Drawing on practical experiences in Colombia, the authors exalt the value of integrating co-creation and innovation tools to promote a more effective, meaningful, and impactful knowledge transfer on forced labour between education disciplines This article, therefore, begins by presenting a descriptive overview of the application of design thinking and innovation camps. Next, the article approximates the application of those methods and instruments in teaching the issue of human trafficking, including forced labour. Then, it examines the opportunities of using design thinking and social innovation camps to educate a new generation with the knowledge, skills, and power to disrupt forced labour. Finally, this article concludes that design thinking and innovation camps are practical m...

Due in part to the growing concern of in-custody deaths and limited response by corrections officials, in-custody deaths have garnered considerable attention both in Canada and internationally. While preventing all deaths in custody is not possible, there may be opportunities to intervene in order to prevent some of these deaths. Identification of the factors that may contribute to in-custody deaths could assist in the development of interventions to address this issue. This commentary proposes that a national database of in-custody deaths be established in Canada that collects detailed information on all deaths in federal, provincial, and police custody. This database would help to objectively inform custodial policies and practices and allow comparisons with other jurisdictions.

This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the research and programs related to Indigenous youth crime across four jurisdictions with significant Indigenous populations (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States). The chapter itself has been organized into several sections in order to more readily provide readers with a conceptual framework as well as identifiable gaps in the literature. After reviewing the jurisdictional and contextual information specific to each of the four countries, a conceptual framework is provided which identifies the various contributing factors to this issue and categorizes them according to whether they are systemic or individual. The chapter then reviews a number of system-based and targeted frontline programs that have been implemented in the four jurisdictions and provides commentary on their effectiveness and evidence-base. Finally, the chapter provides a review of the gaps in the literature, highlighting the need for additional research which is culturally responsive, gender-responsive, and inclusive of current trends in the field.

cases are studied in this chapter. The first 42 cases represent deaths that involved the first and second generation taser weapons, the TASER TF-76, the TASERTRON, and the AIR TASER 34000, that took place between 1983 and 1999. The next 171 cases were related to the use of the third and fourth generation taser weapons, the ADVANCED TASER M26 and the TASER X26, that took place between 2000 and 2005. In each case, Williams identifies the name of the deceased, the age, race/gender, the agency involved in the taser use, the date of the incident, the cause of death, the role of the taser device in the death of the subject, and whether it is excluded, doubtful, possible, confirmed or undetermined. A brief synopsis of the facts of each case is provided. Williams contends that because record laws vary among the states, obtaining information for the cases was an arduous task. Thus, information for the cases was compiled from wire service, television, newspaper, police, and autopsy reports. The last chapter of Williams’ book provides a thorough analysis of the data collected. The author concludes that, as a cause of death, the taser was excluded in 149 cases; doubtful in 10 cases; undetermined in 11 cases; and confirmed only in 1 case. In this case, the target was initially shocked 5 times by the taser for 7, 8, 6, 5, and 9 s, respectively. When the subject continued to fight, an officer applied the taser for 2 min 49 s. He was later pronounced dead. The coroner listed the subject’s cause of death as cardiac arrhythmia due to taser shocks. As a significant contributing factor, taser devices were excluded in 136 cases, doubtful in 12 cases, possible in 6 cases, undetermined in 16 cases, and confirmed only in 1 case. One of the major strengths of this book is that it is the first comprehensive compilation of taser cases collected from media, police, and autopsy reports. While the first two chapters set an exhaustive and scholarly background about the taser as a non-lethal weapon, the cases themselves in chapter 3 are very well organized, straightforward and interesting to read. The fourth chapter provides an excellent analysis of the cases collected for this study, separating evidence from conjecture. It is interesting to note that of the 213 cases, the taser was confirmed as a cause of death in only one case and as a significant contributing factor in another. While this book certainly has academic merit, it will also be of interest to criminal justice practitioners. I really enjoyed reading this book and strongly suggest that it should be made compulsory reading for every police officer who uses the weapon and every law enforcement agency that deploys tasers. An understanding of the medical and technical aspects of the weapon can go a long way in the effective use of the weapon. This book would also make excellent supplemental reading material for a criminal justice class related to the use of force. I strongly recommend this book.

In-custody deaths have garnered considerable attention in recent years, both within Canada and internationally. This study represents the first examination of death-in-custody cases across three provinces – Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario – between 2000 and 2009. To provide context, the article reviews deaths in custody in several international jurisdictions. The objective of this project was to identify baseline indicators of the nature and extent of custody deaths in Canada. Using all completed cases from the offices of Medical Examiners and Coroners, this paper compares and contrasts the manner and causes of death by type of custody (provincial vs. federal) and further compares the mortality trends (natural vs. non-natural) between the provinces. The results and findings from this comparison are then examined and the implications for policy makers are identified. Most of the recommendations relate to improved intake and more sophisticated pre-screening strategies for inmates.
