John Locke discusses the idea of a distinct self and the continuation of consciousness after death. The definition of a personal identity across time is provided. Insofar as it is feasible, such a criteria describes the requirements that must be met in order for people to survive. According to John Locke, psychological continuity determines one's personal identity. He believed that the foundation of one's personal identity, or "self," was awareness, namely recollection, rather than the substance of either the soul or the body. We sustain in this essay, that the criterion of personal identity for Locke is not memory but consciousness. Therefore, for Locke, memory is the power of knowledge of the same consciousness.

Post-culture is associated with the loss of ties of cultural identity derived from globalization. The response of Western societies has been unfortunate, based on so-called multicultural policies. Instead of assuming its cosmopolitan dimension, already prefigured by Kant, communities are split into micro-communities that havetorn the western world apart. This was the result of the unresolved tension between Enlightenment and Romantic values.
We sustain in this essay, that the criterion of personal identity for Locke is not memory but consciousness. Therefore, for Locke, memory is the power of knowledge of the same consciousness.

This will be a comparative study of mythology about the origin of the world, pinpointing the philosophical principles guiding that knowledge. Usually, studies on cosmogony within anthropology and comparative mythology aren’t categorical – meaning to aim towards a universal model – and when they are, they fail, because they are too close to the visual representations they aim to explain.

According to Bataille, facing the same reality, we can have two completely different approaches. One of them, privileged by science, gives account of the objective and neutral side of reality. However, while not depreciating it, in this way it translates a third-person view, a view of nowhere, in which the experiential, not the experimental, is denied. On the contrary, the inner experience translates a mode of observation of the phenomena in which the concern is to translate the way they are lived. Inner experience is not to be confused with consciousness, although it is present in it. Now, according to Bataille, the most intense experience coincides with eroticism, not so much of bodies or souls, but of sacred eroticism. In strict terms, it is a pleonasm, insofar as eroticism and the sacred are the same.

The traditional interpretation of Schopenhauer's "The World as Will and Representation" sustains the antinomy between the World as Will, considered as blind desire, and the World as Representation, as a rational but illusory view of reality. We'll argue that the notion of representation beyond the principle of reason, and of the will beyond nihilist desire gives us a new view of reality beyond the World itself. To understand our thesis we must acknowledge the impact of Plato's philosophy on Schopenhauerian metaphysics. The World as Will and Representation seems fairly simple to describe, either in the1818's four books first edition, or in the 1844's second edition (containing a second supplementary book to each of the original four books). The first book shows us the world, as we perceive it, as plain representation, in which the term "representation" must be understood as appearance and not as reality. The second book argues reality is, essentially, will, considered prima facie as blind and inexorable desire bringing nothing but suffering to those who live it. The third book stands for art as a mental sublimation for pacifying suffering, as a palliative. Finally, the fourth book suggests compassion and mysticism as a way of freeing ourselves from that suffering as they are the expression of radical renunciation to will, that way allowing closeness to the much-aspired emptiness and nothingness, in this nihilist and pessimist view. We'll argue this interpretation, although generally supported, is superficial and doesn't take into consideration the relevance of platonic reasoning and the Upanishads in Schopenhauer's work. As the author himself highlights,

We can find an undisputed thematic unity in the philosophical thought of Cristina Beckert, centred on a constant preoccupation with the foundations of the ethical attitude, as a privileged posture of being human. Even when the author considered other questions such as the experience of time or the nature of the work of art, what motivated her was to unveil the underlying ethical principles.

This paper argues that the specific trait of human nature can be found in the gap, as well as in the complementarity between the first person perspective and the view from nowhere (third person perspective). The human ability to conceive of a view from nowhere, of a God‘s eye, in other words, the ability to grasp a question from a third person point of view without losing sight of the first person view, appears to be unique. But it also asserts that it is impossible to solve the problem of personal identity using the strategy of the third person view.

This paper aims to analyse how literary fiction deals with two real cases of philistine violence on cultural objects, one artistic and the other scientific. In this way, we will analyse Mishima's novel, The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, which narrates the destruction of one of the "jewels of Kyoto," as well as Joseph Conrad's The Secret Agent, which novelised the attack against the meridian of Greenwich. In both cases, we are confronted with the same attitude, namely, the insane resentment against the reality principle.

This essay aims to analyze the conception of a work of art in the thought of Susanne K. Langer. This thesis is, in turn, constructed from a robust theory of the symbolic function of the human mind.

In this essay we study the nature of consciousness and its relation to personal identity. We argue that the best cognitive strategy to investigate the self implies the notion of narrative identity, though we find it wrong to identify self-consciousness with a narrative. In a narrative we can take the place of the other, imagine possible scenarios, teaching our sensibility in complex problem solving. Biographic, historical or fiction narrative is a
privileged instrument of knowledge, allowing us to explore people’s identity and nature  without falling in the extremes of introspection, self-indulgent
on many occasions, or impersonal neutrality. Personal identity is, consequently, the questioning on the final unique particularity of each one of us and a privileged instrument of access to that experience.

This paper's central purpose is to answer a simple question: to what extent cinema, considered within its narrative dimension, can elucidate the main dilemmas of personal identity. As we will see, although not consensual, it is at least recognized that literature isn't, in any aspect, indifferent to the way we think about ourselves. But can we sustain that cinematographic narrative adds to a better clarification of the concept in analysis or, on the contrary, the result of that inquiry will only restate, beneath a new approach, the same questions previously known? In simple terms, we are faced with the following dilemma: either cinema, as a narrative art form, brings new elements to resolving the problem or those given are common to all narrative forms (from comics to epic poems). Before we address this question, it is important firstly to clarify the meaning of some metaphysical and psychological concepts. The problem concerning personal identity was articulated by John Locke, late in the 17 th century, in his crucial work, An essay concerning Human Understanding, particularly when discussing the problem of unity and diversity. One can say it seeks to clarify what criteria are necessary and sufficient to state that one is the same person, at different moments in time, whether past or future. No one bathes twice in the waters of the same river, stated Heraclitus, but, as a more fearless disciple might say, not even once. Very often, the problem addressed by Locke is misunderstood in the way that it doesn't take into consideration the simplest concept of identity, that is, the logical notion of " numerical identity ". In fact, it is usual for people to sustain having become a different person or having different " selves " just because time went by in their lives. This is a legitimate statement if one is claiming that the essential or secondary properties of a being have changed, but it misses the target when questioning the identity of the subject of those properties. Take one simple example: the glass I

Between the 14th and 16th December 2017, the IV Iberian Aesthetic Meeting, aiming to encourage collaboration between Spanish and Portuguese researchers in the field of philosophical aesthetics, was held in Lisbon, at the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa (UL) and at the Faculdade de Ciências Socials e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (NOVA).
Organised by the Centre of Philosophy of the University of Lisbon, CFUL, the Art History Institute of the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, (NOVA), and by the Sociedad Española de Estética y Teoría de las Artes (SEyTA), the call for papers invited researchers to address the main issues related to intimacy, both from the point of view of aesthetics and artistic creation.
In such context, the proposed theme of intimacy focused on two distinct but complementary directions. On the one hand, upstream, we aimed to address the public and private nature of aesthetic feelings and, on the other hand, downstream, we wished to analyse how artistic creation deals with intimacy in human relations. Reflecting on the role of aesthetics and art in the creation of a sense of belonging and identity, we set ourselves to address themes such as Aesthetics and Intimacy, Art and Intimacy, and Intimacy and Identity.
