This paper derives a simulation based comparison for UWBOFDM with different multipath channel models. Several multipath channel models such as (AWGN, Rayleigh and Rician) has been simulated and compared with a proposed hybrid combination of Rayleigh, Rician and AWGN to observe a realistic multipath faded environment. These cases are based on no fading and flat Rayleigh-fading, multiple-diversity reception Rayleigh-fading, and

Palm oil fuel ash (POFA) is a by-product from palm oil mill. It is found that this ash contains pozzolanic which possess cementitious properties that enable it to replace cement. This leads to this research to study the possibility of POFA to replace Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) in stabilizing peat soil. POFA which were collected from Bukit Kerayong was dried

Understanding how nodes interconnect in large graphs is an important problem in many fields. We wish to find connecting nodes between two nodes or two groups of source nodes. In order to find these connecting nodes in huge graphs, we have devised a highly parallelized variant of a k-shortest path algorithm that levies the power of the Hadoop distributed computing

ABSTRACT The current state-of-the-art speech emotion recognition approaches focus on discrete emotion classification to suit the users' need. However, in more practical perspective, emotion is deemed complex to be individually segregated and it is a continuous process that will change dynamically over time. Subsequently, no researcher can really claim of being able to find the threshold discriminating one emotion to another. In this paper, an alternative approach of Valence-Arousal is introduced based on the psychologists' understanding that emotion can be represented in two emotion primitives of Valence and Arousal. Empirical results show potential of the proposed approach, which achieved reasonable accuracy with better speech emotion understanding and analysis.

Autism is often diagnosed during preschool or toddled age. This diagnosis often depends on behavioral test. It is known that individuals with autism have abnormal brain signals different from typical persons yet this difference in signals is slight that it is often difficult to distinguish from the normal. However, Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals have a lot of information which reflect the

In order to assess the influence of severe hypoglycemia on local cerebral blood flow (1-CBF) artificially ventilated rats, maintained on 70% N2O, were injected with insulin to provide either an EEG pattern of slow-wave polyspikes, or cessation of spontaneous EEG activity for 5, 15 or 30 min ("coma"). In other animals, glucose was injected at the end of a 30 min period of "coma" and 1-CBF was measured after recovery periods of 5, 30, 90, or 180 min. Local CBF was measured autoradiographically with 14C-iodoantipyrine as the diffusible tracer. In the slow-wave polyspike period 1-CBF was increased in most of the structures studied, and reached values that were 1.4 to 3.2 times greater than control. In many structures, cessation of EEG activity was accompanied by a further increase in 1-CBF, with some structures (thalamus, hypothalamus, pontine gray, and cerebellar cortex) showing flow rates of 400--500% of control. The increase in 1-CBF was unrelated to arterial hypertension, hypercapnia, or hypoxia. 5 min after glucose injection the hyperemia persisted in only some of the structures studied; in others, the 1-CBF were close to, or below, control values. During the subsequent recovery period 1-CBF was markedly reduced with some structures (cerebral cortical areas, hippocampus, and caudate-putamen) showing flow rates of only 20--35% of control. In others, notably pontine gray and cerebellar cortex, secondary hypoperfusion was never observed. The hypoperfusion was unrelated to arterial hypertension, hypocapnia, or increase in intracranial pressure. It is concluded that, like hypoxia and ischemia, substrate deficiency due to hypoglycemia is accompanied by vasodilatation in the brain. Furthermore, like long-lasting ischemia, severe hypoglycemia is followed by a delayed hypoperfusion…

X-ray powder diffraction was used to characterize a PtSi sputtering target and subsequent films. The powder patterns of each sample indicated lines due to diffraction from different phases. We have initiated a preliminary study through which we have analyzed and characterized these films. The results presented for these samples corroborate with results observed for this system in the planar configuration. {copyright} {ital 1998 Materials Research Society.}

Cardiovascular disease is common cause of death in developed as well as developing countries. The most common cause of Ischemic Heart disease is narrowing of coronary arteries, a process called as atherosclerosis. The objective of the present study is to determine the pattern of ischemic changes detected by technetium tetrofosmin (Tc99m). Sixty five patients presenting as known or suspected ischemic heart disease over a period of two years (December 1995 to December 1998) at Ziauddin Hospital were included in the study. Each patient underwent Tc99m tetrofosmin stress and rest studies. Tetrofosmin study was performed according to one day protocol. By segmental analysis (five segment per patient), 35 patients had perfusion defects by SPECT Tc99m tetrofosmin imaging. Out of 95 perfusion defects, reversible ischemia and mixed defects were more common in inferior wall and fixed defect in left ventricular apex. Reversible ischemia and mixed defects were more common in inferior wall and fi...

Glycosylated hemoglobin was measured, by a colorimetric method, in 49 patients with sickle cell anemia attending Khartoum Teaching Hospital. The level obtained (4.9%, SD 1.3) was significantly lower than the control value (5.6%, SD 0.2; p less than 0.0025). Expressed as percentage of the control value, the glycosylated hemoglobin level in these patients was 81%. This falls midway between the 90% reported in a benign form of sickle cell anemia in Saudi Arabia and the 58% reported in a severe form in an American Black group, which gives support to the observed heterogeneity of sickle cell anemia. Alternatively, glycosylated hemoglobin level in 27 subjects with sickle cell trait (5.6%, SD 0.2) was identical to that of the controls. The state of hemolysis in the sickle cell anemia patients, as indicated by bilirubin levels, did not correlate with the glycosylated hemoglobin values. Although glycosylated hemoglobin measurement is affected by red cell survival, it does not reflect the state of ongoing hemolysis.

The auditors' duties for the prevention, detection and reporting of fraud, other illegal acts and errors is one of the most controversial issues in auditing. This paper reports the findings of a survey that explores the financial report users' perceptions on the extent of fraud in Malaysia and their perceptions of auditors' responsibilities in detecting fraud and the related audit procedures. The study reveals fraud is a concern in Malaysia. This study also finds that there is a widely held misperception of the objective of an audit. This is because, among respondents, a much higher expectation has been placed on the auditors' duties in detecting and reporting fraud than statute or audit standards require. The results of the study show unquestionably the existence, with respect to detection of fraud, of a gap between the perception of the respondents and the present statutory requirements of auditors.
